Soledad Núñez Appointed as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Spain
The Spanish government has officially appointed economist Soledad Núñez as the new deputy governor of the Bank of Spain, following a proposal from the governor of the institution. This appointment comes after Núñez has served on the Governing Council and the Executive Committee of the Bank since 2018.
Soledad Núñez Ramos earned her degree in Economics from Complutense University and furthered her education with a PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota in the United States. Her remarkable career spans over two decades at the Bank of Spain, where she has built an extensive background in economic policy and governance.
In addition to her central bank experience, Núñez has held important political positions. From May 2004 to February 2005, she was the Director General of Economic Policy within the Economic Office of the Presidency during José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's administration. Following this, she served as the Director General of the Treasury and Financial Policy until the end of 2011.
Núñez's expertise also extended to her international contributions; she was an external member of the Target 2 system committee of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 2012 to 2015. That same year, she was appointed as a councilor at Banco Madrid.
In 2012, her name was put forward by the PSOE for the deputy governor role at the Bank of Spain during Luis María Linde’s tenure. However, the Popular Party, which was in government at the time, rejected her nomination due to her previous affiliations, leading to Fernando Restoy Lozano being appointed instead.
With her new appointment, Núñez is set to play a crucial role in shaping Spain's economic landscape as deputy governor. Her extensive background in economics and public policy positions her as a pivotal figure in navigating the challenges facing Spain's financial system.
