Sonia Castedo Rejoins PP After Acquittal in Brugal Case
Sonia Castedo, who served as mayor of Alicante between 2008 and 2014, announced her return to the People's Party (PP) on Tuesday, following her acquittal in relation to the controversial Brugal case. The case revolved around the design of the General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU) for Alicante, and Castedo's announcement came after a significant dinner with former Generalitat President, Francisco Camps, who has also been cleared of all legal charges against him.
Castedo shared this news through social media, emphasizing the meaningful nature of her decision, which was influenced during her dinner with Camps at a restaurant near Muchavista beach in Alicante. In a heartfelt post, she reflected on the past challenges she faced, specifically how the PP had canceled her membership during her trial, stating, 'that is what the statutes dictate,' while noting that not all members faced similar actions during legal proceedings.
Her post captured a moment of reconciliation as she shared photographs of herself and Camps smiling together at the beach. She expressed her gratitude to Camps, stating, 'Well, to be completely honest, the one who made me change my mind was a friend, a companion, someone who never let go of my hand, someone who always believed in me, and I always believed in him.' Her words underscore a powerful bond forged through shared adversity.
Castedo added, 'Time that great judge has shown that neither of us was wrong,' signifying her belief in their innocence and the passage of time as a vindicator. Closing her announcement, she confidently stated, 'Not another word dear Paco. The storm has passed. We are not the same people who entered that storm; we are better.'
The former mayor’s declaration, 'I return to the ship with you. I return to the ship for you,' symbolizes her commitment not only to Camps but also to reclaiming her position within the PP. Her re-entry into the party marks a significant political comeback, bringing renewed attention to her future aspirations within the organization and her ongoing influence in Alicante's political landscape.
