Sony to End Production of Physical Video Game Discs by 2028, Joining Digital Trend
Sony, the renowned Japanese company behind the PlayStation, has announced that it will cease production of physical discs for new video games starting January 2028. From that date forward, all new games will be available exclusively in digital format via the PlayStation Store or through physical retail locations that will sell packages containing only the code to download the games.
This strategic shift comes in light of changing consumer preferences, as the company noted that a significant majority of gamers now prefer accessing and playing their video games digitally rather than through traditional physical media. In its latest company report released in 2025, Sony revealed that sales of video games on physical media accounted for a meager 3% of total PlayStation sales in 2024, while digital downloads made up 20% of sales.
Experts indicate a marked shift in consumer behavior, estimating that around 80% of PlayStation games and an even greater 90% of games for Microsoft's Xbox console are now sold digitally. This digital dominance reflects a broader trend within the gaming industry, prompting major companies to reconsider their distribution models.
In a similar move, Rockstar Games recently announced that it would also phase out physical discs for its highly anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto VI. Set to be launched on November 19, the game will only be available digitally or as a download code in physical packaging. This decision has ignited considerable conversation among fans, particularly due to concerns that eliminating physical discs removes the ability to resell games in the used market, which has long been a staple in the gaming community.
