South Korea's Political Turmoil: Former President Yoon Sukyeol Faces New Charges After Ouster
Former South Korean President Yoon Sukyeol, who was ousted for imposing martial law in December, now faces additional charges of abuse of power. Alongside these new allegations, Yoon has been previously accused of insurrection and high treason, creating a significant political crisis in the country.
Yoon, 64, a member of the conservative People Power Party, held office since 2022. In early April, the Constitutional Court of South Korea upheld his impeachment, ruling that the sudden introduction of martial law violated the country’s Constitution. Although the martial law lasted less than six hours, its abrupt enforcement prompted widespread outrage and upheaval within South Korean politics.
Following his suspension from office, Yoon was arrested on January 15. However, on March 8, he was released after a Seoul court accepted an appeal concerning procedural errors surrounding the arrest warrant.
As South Korea prepares for new presidential elections scheduled for June 3, these developments will undoubtedly influence the political landscape and voter sentiment, especially in light of the recent turmoil surrounding Yoon's leadership and the serious charges he faces.
