Spain Braces for Unprecedented Heat Wave as Summer Approaches

Summer has undeniably arrived early in Spain, with soaring temperatures expected in the coming days. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts that temperatures will surge between 5 to 10 ºC above the seasonal norm, driven by a strong anticyclone stationed over the Azores. This weather pattern is set to cause significant heating across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, leading to enhanced atmospheric stability, clear skies, and prolonged sunshine.

AEMET's special forecast predicts a widespread and gradual rise in temperatures. On Tuesday, regions like the Guadalquivir Valley could see highs of 36 to 38ºC, while the Guadiana Valley expects to reach 36ºC. However, conditions are set to worsen on Wednesday with a new influx of warm, dry air from Africa that carries suspended dust. This will likely push temperatures even higher towards typical summer levels for this time of year.

According to AEMET, the southwestern quadrant of the peninsula, central areas, and the Ebro Valley will bear the brunt of the heat. The peak days of this heatwave are anticipated to be Thursday, the 29th, and Friday, the 30th, with maximum temperatures soaring to 35ºC in the northern plateau, 37ºC in the Ebro and Tagus valleys, 39ºC in the lower Guadiana, and hitting a staggering 40ºC in the Guadalquivir.

While the maximum temperatures take center stage, AEMET notes that minimum temperatures will also rise, albeit at a slower pace. By Thursday and Friday, minimum temperatures will surpass 20ºC across areas of the southwestern peninsula and the Mediterranean coast, extending to the Ebro Valley by Saturday. However, regions like northern Galicia and the Cantabrian area may escape these minimum temperature rises.

As the weekend looms, the forecast indicates some uncertainty, with AEMET suggesting an increase in atmospheric instability in the northern parts of the peninsula. This shift may bring increased cloud cover and some storms as early as Friday, alongside potential haze that could cool down the sizzling temperatures.

Spanish authorities and meteorologists are urging the public to stay vigilant as this heatwave unfolds, especially vulnerable populations. As summer approaches, it remains imperative for citizens to stay cool and hydrated amidst these extreme weather conditions.
