Spain Calls for EU to Cut Ties with Israel Over Human Rights Violations
On Sunday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain would propose a significant measure to the European Union in light of ongoing human rights violations by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. During a rally for the Andalusian pre-election campaign, Sánchez stated that on Tuesday, at a meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels, he would advocate for the EU to terminate its association agreement with Israel. He argued that a government which acts in violation of international law and strays from the core values of the European Union cannot maintain a partnership with the bloc.
Sánchez emphasized the straightforwardness of this stance, declaring, "That government that violates international law and therefore violates the principles and values of the European Union cannot be a partner of the European Union; it is that simple, that straightforward."
This proposal arises as the foreign ministers of EU member countries prepare to convene in Brussels to discuss the unfolding war in the Middle East. The Spanish Prime Minister has urged his counterparts to support his call for action. He expressed his strong opposition to what he termed an "illegal war," which he views as a grievous mistake inflicting tremendous suffering. The humanitarian impact of the conflict has resulted in thousands of lives lost, millions displaced, and significant economic detriment, costing trillions of euros.
During his address, Sánchez underscored the urgency of the situation, saying, "That is why I ask those who started this war to stop this war and to put a stop to Netanyahu."
Furthermore, he sought to clarify Spain's position regarding its relationship with Israel, asserting that while Spain is a friend to the nation, this friendship does not extend to endorsing transgressions against international law that lead to widespread suffering, pain, and death.
