Spain Dispatches Navy Ship to Escort Gaza-Bound Flotilla Amid Heightened Tensions
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain will send a Navy ship to escort the Global Sumud Flotilla on its journey towards Gaza, following recent attacks and the looming threat of further aggression. The Spanish government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring international law is upheld and that the safety of its citizens in Mediterranean navigation is respected.
The ship dispatched for this mission is the Maritime Action Ship BAM Furor P46, a modern vessel manufactured by the public company Navantia in Ferrol, which was delivered to the Navy in 2019. It will embark on its mission from the Arsenal of Cartagena and is equipped with essential tools for potential assistance and rescue operations for the Flotilla, as emphasized by the head of the Executive.
A state-of-the-art vessel, the current Furor represents the third iteration of its name within the Spanish Navy. The first Furor, a British destroyer built in 1896, served as the flagship of its class during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, where it ultimately sank in 1898. The second, a destroyer from the Audaz class, was built by the then Bazán and was operational from 1960 until 1973.
The BAM Furor is part of the Meteoro class of ocean patrol vessels, designed for versatility in maritime surveillance missions, security operations, and the protection of marine traffic. It has an impressive displacement of 2,840 tons, measures 93.9 meters in length, and can achieve a maximum speed of 22 knots. The ship features advanced automation, allowing for enhanced living conditions on board and efficient operation with a reduced crew.
Armed with a 76 mm Oto Melara gun and two 25 mm MK38 Mod2 machine guns, the BAM Furor is also equipped to support helicopter operations with a platform for NH90 or SH60 helicopters and the M5D Airfox drone. This solar-powered unmanned aerial system bolsters surveillance and identification capabilities over a significant area extending up to 20 nautical miles.
Notably, the BAM Furor's role is aligned with defense missions rather than offensive actions. The vessel's capabilities include conducting presence and deterrence operations, surveillance, prevention, and actions directed at mitigating specific threats. It is designed to safeguard national maritime interests and has a role in controlling maritime areas of sovereignty, thereby enhancing cooperation among public administrations responsible for maritime oversight.
Additionally, the ship will support maritime police operations in coordination with State Security Forces and Corps. Its diverse responsibilities include surveillance, rescue operations, and combatting marine pollution, collaborating with various ministries in these endeavors.
As Spain takes a proactive stance on maritime security amid escalating tensions in the region, the deployment of the BAM Furor represents a significant commitment to ensuring safe navigation and adherence to international law in the Mediterranean Sea.
