Spain Faces Severe Wildfire Threat Amid Heatwave and Strong Winds
Spain is currently grappling with the threat of wildfires as the second heatwave of summer coincides with high temperatures and strong winds across various regions. Authorities are particularly concerned about three key areas: Tarifa in Cádiz, Ponteceso in A Coruña, and Muruzábal in Navarra. The Xunta has requested assistance from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) in response to a new fire affecting Ponteceso, which has necessitated the evacuation of residents in the parish of Corme Aldea.
María Rivas, the subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, has mobilized all necessary resources for firefighting efforts, given the imminent risk to homes. However, sources from the Ministry of Rural Affairs have indicated that adverse meteorological conditions, particularly strong northeast winds, have hindered aerial firefighting operations, posing risks to ground personnel.
Fire suppression efforts in Ponteceso are extensive, with six brigades, four water pumps, five agents, and various technical units engaged in combating the blaze. Recent fires in the area have consumed over 500 hectares, with individual fires in Cospindo, Brantuas, and A Graña impacting significant land areas.
In Tarifa, a fire that erupted at around 3 PM on Tuesday in the La Peña area has prompted precautionary evacuations from the Torre de la Peña campsite. The flames reportedly originated from a burning camper, and the situation is being managed through the activation of emergency measures. The Infoca Plan has deployed aerial and ground resources, including five groups of forest firefighters and multiple helicopters, to contain the fire.
The Tarifa City Council confirmed that the fire's spread has been exacerbated by strong easterly winds. Evacuations are also being assessed for establishments near the campsite, and the National Highway N340 has been closed in both directions due to the fire's proximity.
In the Navarra region, the government's spokesperson, Amparo López, sought to reassure the public regarding a fire between Enériz, Muruzábal, Añorbe, and Obanos, stating that no population centers are currently under threat. The government has activated Operational Situation 2 of the Special Emergency Civil Protection Plan for forest fires, responding to the renewed wildfire risks.
The recent blazes have affected areas previously struck by wildfires three years ago, and although efforts are ongoing to stabilize and control the fires, they have already impacted harvested cereal fields and a pine area. Firefighting brigades from various local parks, along with aerial support, are working tirelessly to rein in the flames.
The President of Navarra, María Chivite, emphasized the importance of community responsibility in fire prevention while commending the effective coordination among local authorities. As the firefighting efforts continue, officials are monitoring the situation closely and plan to reassess the conditions with local mayors in the coming hours. Tonight, firefighters will maintain operations to extinguish the fire, with additional efforts scheduled for the following day.
As Spain faces these challenging conditions, the call for vigilance and cooperation among citizens has never been more critical. Stay updated on the developing situation and heed local advisories to ensure safety.
