Spain Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Journalist Soledad Gallego-Díaz
Pedro Sánchez has publicly expressed his condolences following the death of renowned journalist Soledad Gallego-Díaz, recognizing her as one of the most impactful figures in Spanish journalism over recent decades. "Sad to bid farewell to Sol Gallego-Díaz, one of the great journalists of our country," the President of the Government remarked on his X account shortly after news of the former director of El País's passing became known.
Sánchez celebrated her professional legacy, citing her pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Spanish press for many decades. He described her as a benchmark of rigor, independence, and commitment to truth, emphasizing her contributions toward the establishment of a free and demanding press that is vital for democracy.
In his message, the head of the Executive extended his heartfelt support to the journalist’s family, colleagues, and all who admired her work, stating, "My affection goes to her family, her colleagues, and all those who learned from her and admired her."
Soledad Gallego-Díaz, who passed away at the age of 75, was a celebrated figure in Spanish journalism and notably served as the first female director of El País in the newspaper's entire history. Throughout her illustrious career, she made significant contributions to both political and international journalism, covering major cities around the world including Brussels, London, Paris, New York, and Buenos Aires. Notably, she was intricately involved in one of the key exclusives during Spain’s Transition, publishing the draft of the 1978 Constitution.
Her outstanding work in journalism earned her some of the most prestigious awards in Spain, such as the Ortega y Gasset Prize, the Francisco Cerecedo award, and the Margarita Rivière award.
