Spain Urges Israel to Reconsider Expulsion of Médecins Sans Frontières from Gaza Amid Humanitarian Crisis

The Government of Spain, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has called on Israel to allow the international humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to resume its critical operations in Gaza. In a statement released by Minister José Manuel Albares, the government condemned the recent decision by Israeli authorities, emphasizing that NGOs like MSF play an irreplaceable role in providing essential, lifesaving services to the Gazan population. Spain has requested that the Israeli government reverse its decision, which they argue undermines fundamental moral principles vital to global humanitarian efforts. The statement also reminded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his obligation to adhere to international humanitarian law and to uphold the dignity of all humans by addressing their suffering. The Israeli government ordered MSF to vacate Gaza by the end of February after alleging that the NGO had violated stay requirements, specifically citing its refusal to provide a list of its Palestinian employees. In response, Médecins Sans Frontières has defended its position, explaining that the decision not to disclose staff information stems from concerns over the safety and security of their workers, particularly in a context where medical and humanitarian personnel have historically faced intimidation, arbitrary detention, and violence. MSF further highlighted that the expulsion could have devastating effects on the already beleaguered Palestinian population, who are enduring harsh winter conditions amid extensive destruction and urgent humanitarian needs. The organization reported that in 2025 alone, it conducted approximately 800,000 consultations, assisted in one-third of all births, and supported one in five hospital beds—services that are not easily replaced. In light of this, Spain continues to advocate for the re-establishment of vital medical services in the region, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian aid as the conflict continues to unfold.
