Spain's Health Ministry Denounces Homeopathy: A Call for Evidence-Based Medicine
The Spanish Ministry of Health has released a crucial report asserting that homeopathy lacks a scientific basis for the treatment of any diseases. This conclusion comes from extensive research conducted by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), which analyzed a multitude of international studies and found that homeopathic products do not exceed the effects of a placebo.
Titled "Homeopathy and Homeopathic Products Evaluation of Evidence Regarding Their Efficacy and Safety," the document reviews 64 scientific studies published since 2009. The findings reveal that most studies suggesting benefits from homeopathy suffer from methodological flaws, including small sample sizes and biases in design. As trial rigor increases, any purported positive effects of homeopathy tend to vanish.
From a scientific perspective, the Health Ministry emphasizes that the foundational principles of homeopathy are incompatible with contemporary pharmacology. The dilutions commonly used in homeopathic preparations—such as the prevalent 12 CH—suggest that not a single molecule of the active ingredient remains in the mixture. To highlight this inconsistency, the report illustrates that a dilution of 6 CH would be akin to dissolving a single sugar packet in the entire Mediterranean Sea.
In reference to the current status of homeopathy in Spain, the ministry clarifies that there are no authorized homeopathic products with therapeutic indications. The existing products are registered through a simplified procedure that does not require efficacy demonstration, and by law, they cannot contain medical indications on their labels.
Spain's position mirrors that of other countries, which have also instituted restrictive measures against homeopathy. For instance, France has eliminated public funding for homeopathic treatments, while the United Kingdom and Australia have advised against the use of these remedies for serious medical conditions.
Despite the common perception of homeopathy as a harmless alternative, the AEMPS warns of genuine health risks. Among these risks are adverse effects, including cases of intoxication and the potential for patients to abandon or delay effective medical treatments—an essential component of any healthcare strategy. The Ministry of Health cautions that substituting evidence-based therapies with homeopathic remedies can seriously jeopardize patient health and have detrimental effects throughout their lives.
With the publication of this report, the Ministry reaffirms its dedication to evidence-based medicine and public health protection. They emphasize the importance of providing rigorous information to enable citizens to make informed healthcare decisions.
