Spain's Hopeful Contender for the Oscars: 'Second Prize' Shines Bright
In an exciting announcement, the film 'Second Prize' directed by Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez has been selected to represent Spain in the prestigious Oscars, scheduled for March 3rd. This film, which is competing in the Best International Feature Film category, was chosen during a preselection process alongside notable contenders such as 'The Blue Star' by Javier Macipe and 'Marco' by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño.
'Second Prize' takes viewers on a nostalgic journey through the vibrant music scene of 1990s Granada, focusing on an indie band and their experiences leading up to the release of an album that would significantly impact the national independent music landscape. The film draws clear inspiration from the renowned band Los Planetas, capturing the essence and turmoil of the time.
Since its release on May 24th, 'Second Prize' has made waves at the Malaga Film Festival, where it secured the coveted Biznaga de Oro. However, it remains a challenge for fans, as the film is currently limited in availability both in cinemas and on streaming platforms.
The announcement was made by actor Eduardo Noriega, who is a member of the Film Academy as well as the Academy of Hollywood, during an event held at the Film Academy. As the film industry eagerly awaits the outcome, it will not be until the end of the year that it is revealed if 'Second Prize' will advance to the next round, vying for a spot among the 15 finalists for the Best International Feature Film.
Looking back at the previous year, Spanish films '20000 Species of Bees' by Estibaliz Urresola, 'Closing Your Eyes' by Víctor Erice, and 'The Snow Society' by Juan Antonio Bayona were in contention, with the latter securing a nomination at the Oscars for its poignant portrayal of tragedy in the Alps.
With this exceptional representation, all eyes are now on 'Second Prize' as it embarks on an Oscar journey, igniting hopes for Spanish cinema on an international stage.
