Spanish Transport Minister Assures Continued Support as Free Train Tickets Face Review

The Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has confirmed that support measures will be implemented if the government opts to eliminate free tickets for Media Distancia and Cercanías trains, which are set to expire on December 31 unless renewed. In a recent interview with TVE, reported by Europa Press, Puente explained that the government is still deliberating on the future of these free train tickets, stating, "We will make a decision before the end of the year."

Puente emphasized that while the free train tickets have a positive fiscal impact, they may not serve the best interests from a transport perspective. "The economic commitment to public transport should prioritize quality, increased capacity, and improved frequencies," he asserted. He reassured travelers that should the free tickets be terminated, alternative measures will be introduced to support the most economically vulnerable groups, such as frequent commuters and young people.

The Minister highlighted that his department is actively working on solutions to offer discounts for users reliant on public transport for work or those facing social disadvantages. He reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining some level of ticket assistance, which he believes aligns more closely with the public transport policies that will be pursued moving forward.

Puente also mentioned the success of the Verano Joven initiative, which allows discounts for young people, stating it has performed exceptionally well despite starting later in the summer.

Furthermore, he celebrated Spain's current advancements in railway infrastructure, noting it as the best moment for the country's railway services, despite challenges faced over the summer due to significant incidents and disruptions linked to extensive ongoing investments in railways. He referred to important reform projects happening across the network, particularly in major train stations such as Chamartín and Atocha in Madrid.

In concluding remarks about the economic climate, Puente shared his optimism regarding September's unemployment and membership figures which he described as excellent and indicative of Spain's positive growth trajectory.
