Spring Showers and Surprising Temperature Swings: Spain's Bridge Holiday Weather Forecast

As millions of Spaniards embark on a bridge holiday during this festive season, another significant group will also enjoy a day off on Thursday, May 1st. Whether celebrating or working, everyone should prepare for eventful weather, as the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts considerable rainfall throughout the weekend, requiring umbrellas to be at the ready.

While Thursday may bring only occasional showers over the inland peninsula, the weather is set to intensify on Friday, May 2nd. AEMET predicts widespread showers that could be heavy, accompanied by thunderstorms across most parts of the Iberian Peninsula, with the southeastern region being the only area to escape the rain.

The weekend forecast indicates a shift from heavy showers to occasional rain. By Saturday, sporadic showers are expected across the inland peninsula and the Balearic Islands, but by Sunday, rain will largely be confined to the northern interior of the peninsula.

Spring temperatures are also part of the forecast, but this year’s spring is revealing some unusual thermal fluctuations. According to Meteored, a significant spike in temperatures is expected in the northern regions of Spain due to a warm air mass being pushed by the incoming storm.

In a surprising turn of events, Bilbao could experience temperatures nearing 28ºC, potentially surpassing those in the traditionally warmer cities of Seville, Lleida, or Zaragoza, and other locations along the Mediterranean coast.

Conversely, the thermal contrast will lead to noticeable temperature drops in regions such as Andalusia, Extremadura, and Galicia, where temperatures could plummet up to 5 degrees below average. Meanwhile, the Cantabrian slope and the Balearic Islands may witness a rise of more than 10ºC above the average, showcasing the unexpected variability this spring has to offer.

As holiday-goers and workers prepare for the bridge holiday, it's crucial to stay informed about the changing weather conditions. Make sure to follow the latest updates to plan your activities safely amidst the ups and downs of this spring season.
