Storm Francis Triggers Red Alert for Torrential Rains in Málaga
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a red alert as Storm Francis intensifies rainfall across the southern Peninsula, particularly affecting the Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce regions in Málaga province. As of Sunday at 14:42, an EsAlert message was dispatched to the 27 municipalities in the area, warning of expected rainfall accumulation of up to 120 liters per square meter within a perilously short timeframe of less than twelve hours.
This warning remains in effect until 23:59 on Sunday, with a probability of 40 to 70 percent, signifying a substantial risk of flooding and rising waters, as reported by the EFE agency. The western half of the mentioned area is anticipated to suffer the most intense rainfall.
In response to the emerging threat, the Emergency Agency of Andalusia has issued a Civil Protection alert urging residents to exercise extreme caution. Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel, steering clear of flood-prone areas, and refraining from activities near riverbeds and their surrounding areas.
The EsAlert message, sent just before 14:41, reached municipalities including Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Almogía, Benahavís, Cártama, Casares, Coín, Estepona, Fuengirola, Istan, Manilva, Marbella, Mijas, Ojén, Pizarra, Rincón de la Victoria, Torremolinos, Torrox, and Vélez-Málaga.
Residents are advised to heed the precautions: if you find yourself in a flood-prone area, seek higher ground or move to an upper floor. It is vital to stay informed by consulting the advice of emergency services by calling 112 in case of extraordinary risks related to the rain. In the event of emergencies, residents should also use this number to contact authorities promptly.
