Storm Martinho Hits Pontevedra: Minor Injuries and Damaging Winds Reported
The recent Martinho storm has wreaked havoc in Pontevedra, Galicia, resulting in several incidents and minor injuries. According to the Deputy Delegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, the storm has caused two minor injuries and significant damage, including torn roofs in schools and warehouses, as well as numerous traffic accidents triggered by fallen trees.
The storm has led to more than twenty reported accidents on the province's roads, primarily due to trees falling on vehicles or collisions with those already littering the roads. Among the injured were two individuals in A Magdalena, Cangas do Morrazo, and Tomiño, as indicated by the deputy delegate.
In Domaio, Moaña, part of a warehouse roof was torn off and fell onto the PO551 road, necessitating a significant traffic cutoff. Furthermore, the wind damage extended to the town hall in Pazos de Borbén, which suffered roof loss, and serious damage was reported to the roofs of both Rodeira and María Soliño high schools in Cangas do Morrazo, leading to the suspension of classes.
Losada has strongly urged road transport services for both passengers and schoolchildren to heighten their safety measures in light of the dangerous conditions. In fact, the strongest wind gusts were recorded in Neves, exceeding 136 kilometers per hour, according to MeteoGalicia.
In the wake of Storm Martinho, Spain is currently feeling the impacts of the Japanese effect, alongside a forecast by AEMET mentioning a convoluted situation that has spared some areas from the storm's full ferocity. Meteored also indicated that the Fujiwhara effect may have implications for the region in the coming hours, complicating the weather conditions further.
As the community begins to assess the aftermath of this severe weather event, local authorities and citizens are reminded to remain vigilant and heed safety advisories while navigating the storm's impact.
