Storm Nuria Approaches: Red Alert Activated in La Palma as Severe Weather Looms

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated a red alert for the eastern region of La Palma as Storm Nuria approaches, threatening hurricane-force wind gusts exceeding 130 km/h between 5 AM and 5 PM Canary Islands time on Thursday, April 3. The probability of encountering extraordinary dangers during this period is reported to be between 40-70%. AEMET spokesperson Rubén del Campo has issued strong warnings and advised residents to exercise extreme caution.

This significant storm marks the fourteenth event of considerable impact in the current weather season and is expected to unleash heavy rainfall, powerful winds, and rough seas throughout the Canary Islands and parts of the mainland Peninsula. The adverse weather conditions are anticipated to persist until Sunday.

In addition to Nuria, Del Campo noted that another storm system arrived earlier this week, contributing to moist air from the Mediterranean that could trigger rain accompanied by severe thunderstorms across large areas in the northern part of Spain. However, regions in the southeastern Peninsula are expected to remain free of rain during this period.

The passage of a frontal system will further complicate weather conditions, bringing significant precipitation to the western islands of the Canary archipelago, with particularly intense rainfall forecasted for Tenerife.

As for temperatures, there has been a noticeable drop across most of the country, especially in the northern and eastern regions, as the storms advance.

Looking ahead, residents in the Canary Islands should prepare for the impact of Storm Nuria, which is predicted to deliver destructive winds, severe rainfall in mountainous areas, and substantial rainfall across the interior of the Peninsula. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to remain vigilant.
