Strong Earthquake Strikes Campi Flegrei Near Naples

On Monday at 12:47 PM, the Campi Flegrei area near Naples, Campania, experienced a significant earthquake measuring 4.6. The epicenter was located just 1 kilometer from Bacoli and approximately 5 kilometers from Pozzuoli, with the hypocenter positioned at a depth of 49 kilometers. If confirmed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), this earthquake would be the strongest recorded in the Campi Flegrei region in recent decades, alongside an earthquake that occurred last March. Fortunately, no damages or injuries have been reported following the quake, although it was followed by a series of aftershocks characterized by tremors of lesser intensity. The Campi Flegrei area is known for being a volcanic region, where earthquakes are relatively common due to a geological phenomenon known as bradisism. This phenomenon involves ground movement caused by the movement of very hot gases and fluids beneath the Earth's surface. On March 13, a similar earthquake of magnitude 4.6 struck the same region. That quake was felt over a wide area in Campania and resulted in minor damages. Additionally, another earthquake measuring 4.4 occurred on May 20, 2024, marking one of the strongest seismic activities in the past forty years. The region remains under observation as the geological activity continues, ensuring that both residents and officials are prepared for any potential future seismic events.
