Tensions Rise in Congress as Popular Party and Sumar Faction Clash
The recent Plenary Session of the Congress of Deputies promised a heated exchange and it did not disappoint. From the outset, tensions flared as the Popular Party's representatives interrupted the speech of Sumar parliamentarian Viviane Ogou, vocally calling for the resignation of the PSOE's Secretary of Organization, Santos Cerdán. Amidst the chaos, Congress President Francina Armengol stepped in to restore order, admonishing the deputies. "Ladies and gentlemen deputies, enough with the tantrums," she exclaimed, urging the factions to respect the decorum of the chamber. Armengol warned that continued disrespect would lead to a suspension of the session, reminding them that Congress is a sacred space for discourse, not disputes.
Prior to the Plenary, Cerdán distanced himself from any association with alleged contract rigging tied to claims of receiving commissions. He assured the public he would provide clarity as soon as he received a report from the Civil Guard's Central Operational Unit (UCO). "When we know the report, I will give all the explanations I need to give, and I will call all the media for a press conference at Ferraz to explain it," Cerdán stated, trying to calm the growing uncertainties surrounding him.
When pressed about whether he could guarantee that the UCO report would not implicate him in any wrongdoing, he conveyed certainty. "Completely sure," he responded, emphasizing that he had not participated in any discussions regarding the alleged illicit recordings that were supposed to be a part of the report.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will remain on Cerdán and the upcoming revelations, as the political atmosphere grows increasingly charged within the Spanish legislature.
