Teracom: Pioneering Resilient Communication for Sweden's Total Defense

Teracom's mission is clear: to deliver communication solutions that ensure total defense and support critical societal functions, both in everyday situations and during emergencies when other options fail. This commitment is deeply embedded in their technical development and innovation processes. According to Daniel Tisljarec, head of the assignment department at Teracom, the guiding principles are centered around the four Rs: robustness, resilience, resourcefulness, and redundancy. "When all other systems fail, our solutions should remain operational and continue to function," he asserts. Innovation at Teracom is about more than just being at the cutting edge of technology; it involves integrating proven, field-tested solutions that meet rigorous security requirements. "We develop innovative solutions collaboratively with our suppliers and partners while also conducting stringent security evaluations. We deliberately eliminate actors and ownership structures that could introduce vulnerabilities into our systems," Tisljarec explains. One remarkable instance of Teracom's resilience came during the Alfrida storm in January 2019. While many communication systems went down, Teracom's network, which operates independently with its own power supply, continued to function effectively. During this crisis, the company redirected its network capacity to prioritize critical societal needs. With Sweden's recent NATO membership, discussions are now underway to enhance Teracom's network capabilities to support troop movements and joint exercises. Furthermore, the company is exploring collaborative efforts surrounding airborne applications for drones, drawing inspiration from the ongoing situation in Ukraine. At the heart of Teracom's operations lies a robust safety mindset. While other segments of total defense reduced their readiness over the past few decades, Teracom has maintained its high state of preparedness. Tisljarec emphasizes that the company is now committed to marrying this robust safety culture with modern innovation. Founded over 100 years ago, Teracom Group AB has played a pivotal role in securing Sweden's communication infrastructure. With around 450 employees and projected revenues of 1,410 million SEK for the full year 2024, the company continues to be a key player in the realm of secure communication, paving the way for resilient defense solutions in an increasingly complex global landscape.
