The electric motors have become more powerful, and charging times have decreased significantly, even in plug-in hybrids."
A standout model in this evolving landscape is the BMW 530e Touring, which is currently available in Sweden. This premium wagon beautifully exemplifies the strides made in hybrid technology. Sporting a combined system output of 299 horsepower, it pairs a modern turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor providing 184 horsepower. With a net battery capacity of 194 kWh, the vehicle boasts an impressive electric range of up to 95 kilometers, depending on its version and configuration.
"This is a crucial advancement," emphasizes Arenander. "With such a significant electric range, most individuals can manage their daily commutes using just electric power. The vehicle can be charged conveniently at home or at public charging stations."
Beyond its impressive electric capabilities, the BMW 530e Touring has been engineered to maximize both space and driving enjoyment. A common challenge for plug-in hybrids has been integrating a battery without compromising trunk capacity or the size of the gasoline tank. BMW has overcome this issue by embedding the battery in the floor, similar to its fully electric counterpart, the BMW i5. This design choice has resulted in a generous trunk space of 570 liters with the rear seats up while still accommodating a full-sized 60-liter gasoline tank.
The centralized positioning of the battery has produced additional benefits for driving dynamics. The balanced weight distribution ensures a well-handling vehicle that maintains the quintessential driving pleasure that BMW is renowned for. "While an impressive range is vital, BMW never wants to compromise on driving enjoyment," states Arenander.
