Mårten Wahlstedt, the program manager for the Volvo EX90, articulated the significance of this technological evolution. "We have made a huge technological shift. The EX90 is the first product to have taken us through that shift. This is not a transition you make every five years but rather every fifty years," he asserted with pride.
The concept of Safe Space Technology is integral to the EX90. This umbrella term encapsulates a suite of active safety technologies designed not just for driver protection, but also for ensuring the safety of passengers and others on the road. Equipped with advanced radar and camera systems, the EX90 can detect potential dangers both inside and outside the vehicle. The Lidar technology enhances this capability by measuring distance, speed, and object presence with remarkable accuracy.
One of the most notable safety features of the EX90 is its driver monitoring system, which was recently named one of Time Magazine’s best inventions of 2024. This innovative feature utilizes real-time detection technology to assess the driver’s condition, analyzing whether they are impaired, fatigued, or distracted. If necessary, the system can intervene. For instance, should the driver exhibit signs of drowsiness, the vehicle will provide a gentle nudge as a warning, followed by more persistent alerts if the initial notification is ignored. In extreme cases, if the driver falls asleep, the EX90 can safely bring the vehicle to a stop and activate hazard lights to alert surrounding road users.
Lotta Jakobsson, a safety expert at Volvo Cars, emphasizes that extensive knowledge and research on accidents informs the design of the EX90. This allows the brand to maintain a commitment to safety as they continuously gather and implement software updates. "Thanks to the software being constantly updated, our safest car will become even safer without you needing to do anything," Jakobsson stated.
Prospective buyers should note that while the features described may create a secure driving experience, the availability and specifics of these technologies can vary by market. Notably, Lidar-equipped vehicles will initiate in data collection mode, with plans for expanding detection capabilities over time as part of the broader Safe Space Technology evolution. This includes the ability to identify objects from up to 250 meters away even in darkness—further enhancing the EX90's safety profile on the road.
In terms of performance, the EX90 boasts impressive statistics: a WLTP mixed driving range of 625-570 kilometers and electric consumption rates of 205-220 kWh per 100 kilometers, producing zero CO₂ emissions during operation. However, actual range and consumption can fluctuate based on individual driving behavior and external factors. It is important to emphasize that while these advanced safety features provide driver assistance, they are not designed to encourage distracted or illegal driving and do not replace the driver’s responsibility.
