Thousands Arrested in Pakistan During Protests Demanding Imran Khan's Release

In a significant escalation of political tensions in Pakistan, police have arrested approximately 4,000 protesters throughout the nation who are calling for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The mass demonstrations unfolded as supporters of Khan, particularly from his party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), attempted to converge on the capital city of Islamabad. The protests are especially concentrated in Punjab, the country's most populous province, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reflecting widespread grievances against the current government's actions.

According to a police officer in Punjab, the arrests include five members of parliament, suggesting the protests have not only captured public sentiment but have also involved significant political figures. Supporters of Imran Khan contend that his detainment stems from politically motivated charges that have been leveled against him following his ousting over a year ago.

On Sunday, large convoys of PTI supporters set out for Islamabad, reportedly facing significant police resistance along the routes. Authorities blocked main access roads in an attempt to thwart the influx of protesters heading for the capital. Clashes erupted at multiple locations, leading to confrontations characterized by stone-throwing and the use of tear gas by law enforcement.

In a bid to control the situation, the government has suspended mobile internet access in areas of intense protest, further complicating communication among demonstrators. As of Monday morning, protests are still ongoing, although many supporters have been unable to breach the barriers set up around the central government district in Islamabad.

The situation remains fluid as Khan's supporters organize to continue their demands for justice and political freedom, underscoring the deepening divide within the country’s political landscape.
