Thousands Pay Last Respects to Pope Francis as He Lies in State

In an unprecedented display of devotion, over 48,600 mourners have paid their respects to Pope Francis, who is currently lying in state at St. Peter's Basilica. The public homage began on Wednesday at 11:00 AM and continued until 8:30 AM Thursday, according to Vatican media.

Originally scheduled to close at midnight, the basilica extended its hours until 5:30 AM on Thursday due to the overwhelming number of visitors queuing to pay their last respects. From midnight to 5:30 AM alone, approximately 13,000 individuals were able to visit the remains of the late pontiff, who passed away at the age of 88 on Monday after leading the Catholic Church for 12 years.

The emotional atmosphere surrounding the basilica reflected the profound loss felt by those who came to honor Pope Francis, a figure known for his humility and progressive vision within the Church. His legacy continues to inspire many, as evidenced by the long lines that formed outside the iconic Catholic landmark, symbolizing the deep connection he forged with people all over the world.

The Vatican's decision to extend visiting hours demonstrates not only the respect afforded to the pope but also the challenge of accommodating the grief of his followers. As the world mourns, the faithful gather to remember and celebrate the life of a leader who sought to bridge divides and promote unity within a fragmented world.
