TikTok's Future at Stake: Will a Sale Save the App from Shutdown?

As of April 5, 2024, TikTok is facing a critical juncture, with just 75 days elapsed since Donald Trump assumed the presidency of the United States. The clock is ticking for TikTok's ownership to be resolved, or it may face a government-mandated shutdown. Although this 75-day deadline is not embedded in existing law, Trump issued a presidential order on his first day in office, granting TikTok's parent company, Bytedance, additional time to secure an American buyer.

To date, however, no buyer has come forward, despite interest from a variety of companies and individuals. Notable contenders include tech giants Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, and Walmart, as well as Tim Stokely, the founder of OnlyFans.

The looming shutdown threat largely stems from TikTok's connections to China. The company asserts there are no affiliations with the Chinese government, particularly regarding the version of TikTok operated in the U.S. Nonetheless, investigations have suggested that Bytedance may have access to data belonging to American users of TikTok.

These concerns intensified when a new law was enacted last fall, compelling TikTok to divest to American ownership or cease operations within the U.S. Interestingly, Trump has had a fluctuating stance on the app's fate. Initially, during his first term, he advocated for a ban, citing national security risks. However, he later sought to facilitate a sale instead.

In a surprising twist in 2024, Trump softened his rhetoric, expressing intentions to 'save' TikTok—a strategy he claims has attracted young voters. The app's future also appears intertwined with Trump's trade conflicts. He has indicated a willingness to relax tariffs imposed on Chinese goods contingent on Bytedance's agreement to divest its American sector.

'I might give them a little tariff reduction or something to get it done,' Trump stated previously, illuminating the transactional nature of negotiations regarding the app. The exact process for a potential sale remains unclear; however, discussions largely focus on TikTok's recommendation algorithm, which is considered crucial to the app's immense popularity.

Kelsey Chickering, an analyst at Forrester, emphasized this point, stating, 'TikTok without its algorithm is like Harry Potter without his wand; simply not as powerful.' As TikTok's fate hangs in the balance, both users and the entertainment industry are left waiting to see if a resolution can be reached, or if the app will eventually fade from the digital landscape.
