Tragedy Strikes as Cable Car Crash Near Naples Claims Four Lives
A catastrophic cable car accident near Naples has left four people dead and one seriously injured, officials confirmed on Thursday. The incident occurred at Monte Faito, a peak located approximately 28 miles (45 km) southeast of Naples, where a cable car cabin tragically fell to the ground.
Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of EAV, the public transport company operating the cable car service, described the situation as a 'tragedy.' Reports indicated that one of the supporting cables had snapped, leading to the devastating crash.
In total, sixteen passengers were rescued from the cable car, which had come to a stop in midair. Rescue teams utilized harnesses to evacuate individuals one by one, as illustrated in footage broadcasted by Rai public television and other news outlets.
Vincenzo De Luca, the president of the Campania region, addressed the challenges faced during the rescue operations, which were complicated by poor weather conditions, including fog and strong winds.
This incident raises significant concerns about cable car safety in Italy, only two years after a previously tragic event in 2021, when 14 people died when another cable car plunged near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. As investigations commence into the circumstances surrounding Thursday's crash, the nation mourns the loss of life and hopes for a swift recovery for the injured.
