At least 79 people have died following the catastrophic collapse of a disco roof in the Dominican Republic, with an additional 155 individuals reported injured. The incident occurred at the Jet Set club in the capital city of Santo Domingo during a concert by popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Eyewitnesses reported that parts of the roof fell on concert-goers around 12:44 AM, marking the onset of a tragic night.
The reasons behind the roof collapse remain unclear. Local newspaper Listín Diario suggested that Rubby Pérez, a celebrated musician across Latin America, may have also been a victim of this disaster, although further details about his condition are pending.
Antonio Espaillat, the owner of the Jet Set club, expressed his devastation in a heartfelt video message directed to the families of the victims. "There are not enough words to express the pain over this event. What happened was devastating for all of us. We are with you and share your sorrow," he stated.
Among those confirmed dead was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province. Her brother, professional baseball player Nelson Cruz, shared his grief on Instagram, noting her dedication to serving her community with love and commitment.
In response to the disaster, President Luis Abinader visited the site and extended his condolences via social media. "We deeply regret the tragedy at the Jet Set disco," he wrote on platform X. Over 300 emergency responders were mobilized for the rescue operations, diligently searching for survivors among the rubble. They utilized thermal imaging cameras to aid in their efforts, as officials remained hopeful that there might still be people trapped alive under the debris. "As long as there is still hope, we will continue to work," insisted Juan Manuel Méndez, head of civil protection. There have been signs indicating the possibility of survivors, which has kept rescuers motivated in their search.
