Tragedy Strikes as Sailboat Sinks Near Palermo After Tornado
A 50-meter-long sailboat carrying 22 people sank off the coast of Porticello near Palermo early on Monday, following the violent impact of a tornado in the area. The sudden and severe weather conditions caused chaos at sea, leading to the distress call that prompted a rapid response.
Coast guards managed to rescue 15 passengers from the turbulent waters, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy. Unfortunately, seven individuals remain unaccounted for, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation. Firefighter divers are currently working to reach the sunken vessel, which rests at a depth of 49 meters, approximately half a mile offshore.
In addition to the coast guard, the Carabinieri police, the 118 emergency medical service, and the civil protection agency are collaborating to provide assistance to the survivors.
