Tragedy Strikes at Gijón Port as Crane Collapse Leaves Two Dead and Several Injured

In a tragic incident at the Gijón port of El Musel, two workers have lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries, one of them critically, following the collapse of a crane. Emergency services reported that the accident took place around 11:07 AM, though the exact cause of the crane's failure remains unknown.

The collapse involved two cranes, which fell onto a portion of the platform at the Osa dock, prompting swift action from local rescue teams. Several units of the Gijón firefighters were quickly deployed to the scene to assist with rescue and search operations, particularly as there were initial fears that a worker might have fallen into the sea.

The Emergency Medical Care Service (SAMU) responded by dispatching multiple ambulances and mobile intensive care units (ICUs) to the port. One of the ambulances transported the worker in critical condition to the Central University Hospital of Asturias located in Oviedo. Another mobile ICU took a separate injured worker to Cabueñes Hospital in Gijón, where he remains in critical condition. A basic support ambulance also conveyed a third employee with minor injuries to the same health facility.

As investigations into the cause of the crane collapse continue, the Gijón community mourns the loss of life and stands in solidarity with the injured workers and their families. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
