Tragedy Strikes: Explosion at Eni Fuel Depot Leaves Two Dead and Several Injured Near Florence

Florence Mayor Sara Funaro described the aftermath of a devastating explosion at an Eni fuel depot near the Tuscan capital on Monday, revealing that the situation is dire. The tragic incident has resulted in two confirmed deaths, three individuals reported missing, and at least nine others injured.

"The situation is very bad," said Mayor Funaro, emphasizing the urgency of the response. "We are actively monitoring the situation alongside the prefecture and the municipalities of Calenzano and Prato."

In the wake of the explosion, officials have requested updates regarding air quality and environmental safety from the regional environment agency, Arpat. They urged residents in the area to exercise extreme caution as assessments continue. "At the moment, we have no issues in Florence regarding air quality; initial reports have provided some reassurances," the mayor stated.

Local authorities are also making arrangements to provide psychological support for families affected by the incident. As the community grapples with the tragedy, officials are determined to lend assistance wherever possible.

Among the injured is a 50-year-old man who described the harrowing moment of the explosion. "We were thrown several meters and left in a state of shock," he recounted. "It felt as if thunder had just erupted around us."

This man was at work, approximately 100 meters from the blast site. He was one of five individuals who were immediately taken to the Santo Stefano hospital in Prato. Fortunately, none of the injured victims sustained life-threatening injuries; most suffered only cuts and minor trauma that are expected to heal in a few days.

Reflecting on the terrifying experience, he said, "We did not comprehend what was happening; it occurred in just a few seconds. The force of the explosion was so immense that it caused us to jump several meters within our office. The windows shattered, and we were thrown about—it was the most traumatic experience of my life, and I am still stunned."

As the investigation continues, the affected communities are coming together in support of one another during this tragic time.
