Tragedy Strikes Kocani: Nightclub Fire Claims 59 Lives as Investigations Unfold
KOCANI, North Macedonia – The close-knit community of Kocani is grappling with an unimaginable tragedy following a catastrophic fire at a local nightclub that has claimed at least 59 lives and injured over 150 others. The incident, which occurred on March 15 during a concert by the band DNA, has left families in anguish as they await news about their loved ones.
Health Minister Arben Taravari has warned that the death toll may still rise as firefighters and emergency responders continue their efforts in the aftermath of the blaze. Condolences have poured in from neighboring nations, the European Union, and the United States, united in mourning for the young lives lost in this heart-wrenching disaster.
Initial reports from investigators indicate that the fire was sparked by a pyrotechnic display, igniting flammable materials in the club’s ceiling which quickly led to the spread of flames and thick smoke. Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski revealed troubling insights into the operation of the nightclub, suspecting that it may have been operating without a proper license. He expressed concerns about potential graft and corruption in the licensing process for venues in North Macedonia, stating, "We have reason to believe that wrongdoing was involved in this case."
As the investigation unfolds, an arrest warrant has already been issued for four individuals, with approximately 20 more considered persons of interest in this ongoing criminal inquiry. Some of those implicated have perished in the fire while others are receiving treatment for their injuries, complicating the investigation.
Toshkovski stated that some of the suspects are currently being interrogated, including event organizers, and additional details will emerge as the investigative process proceeds. He also noted that the majority of the deceased victims have been identified, allowing some semblance of closure for grieving families during this harrowing time.
Witnesses at the scene recount the chaos that ensued as the flames erupted. Many individuals attempted to rescue those trapped inside, with one local, Aleksandar Mishev, revealing how he, along with others, helped carry young people to safety as panic set in amid the rising flames. Another witness, Stojan Guvchevski, lamented, "The loss of so many young lives is irreparable, and the pain of the families is immeasurable."
In a social media post, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski mourned the tragic loss, sharing his condolences for the families affected. Kocani, with a population of approximately 25,000, lies roughly 100 kilometers east of the capital, Skopje. As a country of 18 million with aspirations to join the European Union, North Macedonia has been shaken to its core by this tragedy.
Leaders from Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Albania have sent messages of solidarity and condolences to the nation. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed her sorrow over the devastating incident, while U.S. Ambassador Angela Aggeler offered heartfelt sympathy and support for those impacted by the fire, highlighting the collective mourning shared by the international community.
