Tragedy Strikes Madrid as Building Collapse Leaves Workers Missing
A towering plume of dust erupted in the heart of Madrid, accompanied by a terrifying roar, as a building on Hileras Street collapsed on Tuesday. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with four workers engaged in renovations still unaccounted for.
Milagros, a hair salon owner whose establishment is situated directly across from the site, recounted her vivid experience. As she prepared to open her salon, she witnessed the dust cloud engulf the area from the open windows of the construction site, likening it to a ‘volcano of dust’ tumbling down.
Emergency services arrived promptly, evacuating nearby buildings amid fears of further collapse from the stricken structure, which locals believe has been in the process of becoming a hotel for around six months. After closing her shop, Milagros observed workers exiting the site, donning masks in a hasty retreat. "It was a huge scare, terrible," she recounted.
The streets surrounding the incident have been cordoned off by security forces, creating a gathering of onlookers, media personnel, and residents who are concerned about the unfolding crisis. Many local workers, like one from a nearby restaurant, found themselves caught in the chaos, having just returned from shopping, with no access to their jobs.
Neighbors like Lucas from Arenal Street and Ana from another building on Hileras Street are among those impacted, as both were unable to return home and learned of the disastrous event through news reports.
In response to the crisis, Madrid's Deputy Mayor Inma Sanz, alongside regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso and government representative Francisco Martín, visited the scene to oversee the emergency response and assess damage.
As rescue efforts continue, the city remains on high alert, grappling with the fear and uncertainty from this unexpected tragedy.
