Tragic Collision: Alvia Train Crashes into Car in Palencia, Two Portuguese Nationals Dead

A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning when an Alvia train collided with a car at a level crossing in Husillos, Palencia. According to the Government Subdelegation of the province, at least two Portuguese nationals traveling in the vehicle lost their lives in the incident.

The collision happened at 9:56 AM at kilometer 304180 of the railway line, which intersects the Monzón-Husillos road. The level crossing was temporarily in use due to ongoing AVE construction works, with the train traveling towards Cantabria. Specifically, Alvia train 4273 was en route from Madrid to Santander when it struck the car, forcing it to be displaced approximately 900 meters from the point of impact.

There were around 90 passengers onboard the train at the time of the accident, none of whom sustained injuries, according to reports from the regional emergency service, 112. Passengers remained on the train for their safety and are to be transported by bus to the capital of Palencia.

Authorities have indicated that efforts are underway to locate any additional occupants of the vehicle who may have been ejected during the crash. Reports confirm that Adif, the railway infrastructure manager, has announced a suspension of rail traffic between Monzón de Campos and Palencia along the conventional width line connecting Palencia and Santander due to the accident.

Emergency services, comprising the Civil Guard, Palencia Provincial Firefighters, and medical units, were dispatched promptly to the scene. A mobile Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and two basic life support ambulances were deployed to assist in any medical needs arising from the tragic event.

As investigations continue, authorities are working diligently to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision and to ensure the safety of all railway operations in the area.
