Tragic Collision at Sea: 14 Migrants Dead Near Chios Island
A tragic maritime incident has occurred off the eastern Aegean island of Chios, where a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a Greek coastguard patrol vessel, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 individuals, according to the coastguard. Following the collision, a substantial search and rescue operation was launched, involving four patrol vessels, an air force helicopter, and a private boat with divers, to locate any potential missing passengers.
In addition to the fatalities, another 24 individuals were rescued and transported to a hospital on Chios. Among those injured were two coastguard officers. The extent of the injuries among the rescued migrants remains unclear at this time.
The coastguard did not provide immediate details on the number of people who were aboard the speedboat, nor did they release any information regarding the identities of the casualties or the other passengers involved in the accident.
Local news footage captured the aftermath, showing at least one individual being carried from a coastguard boat into a waiting vehicle, accompanied by children who appeared to be in distress.
Greece has long been a primary entry point into the European Union for those fleeing conflict and impoverished conditions in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Unfortunately, fatal accidents in these treacherous waters are all too frequent. Many migrants risk the short yet perilous journey from the Turkish coastline to nearby Greek islands, which can end tragically in scenarios like this.
Over recent years, the increasing presence of coastguard patrols and reports of pushbacks—summary deportations that do not permit asylum applications—by Greek authorities have contributed to a significant decline in crossing attempts. In response to the ongoing migration crisis, Greece, alongside various other EU countries, has been tightening regulations and procedures related to immigration.
In December, the European Union aimed to revamp its migration system, focusing on expediting deportations and enhancing detention measures. With the new regulations, the situation surrounding migration into the EU could become even more complex, potentially leading to more tragedies at sea as desperate individuals continue to seek safety and a better life.
