Tragic Collision in Guadalquivir River Pursuit: Second Drug Trafficker Dies in February

A suspected drug trafficker lost his life on Monday night during a dramatic chase involving a drug boat 40 miles from the mouth of the Guadalquivir River. The incident arose from a pursuit initiated by the Civil Guard after they detected a vessel believed to be transporting narcotics. Sources from the Civil Guard of Cádiz informed Europa Press that there were four individuals aboard the drug boat, which was equipped with three engines. Following the collision with the Civil Guard vessel, one suspect died at the scene and another was injured, requiring airlift to a hospital in Jerez de la Frontera. The remaining two members of the crew are now in custody.

The pursuit commenced around 9:45 PM when authorities identified the suspicious boat loaded with an unknown quantity of drugs. In the course of attempting to intercept the narcotics vessel, the drug boat encountered an accident, resulting in the tragic fatalities reported.

This incident marks the second death of a suspected drug trafficker in February alone. Earlier in the month, on February 7, a collision occurred in the waters of Tarifa between a Civil Guard Maritime Service patrol boat and a recreational vessel that was also linked to drug trafficking. That collision led to one fatality and left another individual severely injured.

Reports indicate that drug boats have increasingly been navigating the Guadalquivir River, with some even sighted near La Cartuja in Seville. The Civil Guard is actively investigating suspected trafficking activities, with indications that at least three vessels believed to be engaged in this illicit trade navigated up the river, likely seeking refuge from adverse weather conditions.

As the authorities continue to pursue and confront the growing narcotics trade in the region, the situation remains precarious, highlighting the risks involved and the serious consequences of drug trafficking in Andalusia.
