Tragic Death of Malnourished Palestinian Woman in Italy Highlights Dire Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
A tragic report has emerged from Italy where Marah Abu Zuhri, a 20-year-old Palestinian woman suffering from severe malnutrition, has passed away at a hospital in Pisa following her evacuation from Gaza. Marah, accompanied by her mother, arrived in Pisa on an Italian humanitarian flight earlier this week, as part of an operation bringing critical patients with severe health issues to safety.
The University Hospital of Pisa has described Marah's condition as complex, indicating she was in a profound state of organic wasting. After undergoing tests and beginning treatment, she experienced a sudden respiratory crisis leading to cardiac arrest. Although the hospital did not provide detailed information on her condition, reports suggest that severe malnutrition played a significant role in her deteriorating health.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has resulted in the evacuation of over 180 children and young people to Italy since the conflict began between Israel and Hamas. According to the UN World Food Programme, a third of the Palestinian population in Gaza goes for extended periods without food, with half a million individuals on the verge of starvation. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has indicated that the worst-case scenario of famine is unfolding in the region, urging for an urgent ceasefire to mitigate widespread suffering.
Amidst these dire conditions, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that malnutrition and starvation have led to the deaths of 227 individuals, including 103 children, since October 2023. Despite the grave situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied that there is a policy of starvation in Gaza, a claim met with skepticism even from some international allies.
Furthermore, many sick children in Gaza remain in critical need of medical evacuation. Olga Cherevko, a spokesperson for OCHA, recounted her heartbreak after encountering a seven-year-old girl named Janah who she had met previously while undergoing treatment for malnutrition. Despite improving health in the past, Janah has returned to the hospital, now facing a worsening condition without proper diagnosis and treatment due to the current crisis.
The latest evacuations, supported by the World Health Organization, allowed for the transfer of 32 children and six adults to Italy, Belgium, and Turkey. However, over 14,800 patients still await evacuation for necessary medical care. Cherevko emphasized the urgency of continuing these evacuations to save lives, highlighting the deteriorating state of children and adults with preexisting health conditions exacerbated by malnutrition.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza and the urgent need for global attention and assistance to prevent further loss of life.
