Tragic Discovery: Bodies of Five Italian Divers Found in Maldives
The search for five Italian divers who went missing in the Maldives has tragically concluded with the discovery of their bodies. The group, consisting of experienced divers, had not resurfaced after a scuba diving excursion last Thursday. While one body was recovered shortly after the incident, the remaining four were located on Monday morning by a team of Finnish divers, part of the Divers Alert Network Europe, an esteemed organization dedicated to diving safety and medical assistance.
The bodies were found near a cave at a depth of 60 meters around Alimathà Island, located in the Vaavu Atoll—a group of stunning coral islands situated about an hour away from the Maldives' capital, Malé. At present, the bodies have only been identified, with plans for their recovery to take place in a subsequent diving operation.
Among the divers were notable figures, including Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor at the University of Genoa and an authority on marine environments, and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal. Joining them were Muriel Oddenino, a fellow marine biologist and research associate at the University of Genoa, and Federico Gualtieri, a recent graduate under Montefalcone. The group was led by Gianluca Benedetti, an underwater instructor who was working in the Maldives; he was the first victim to be found.
All five divers were reported to be seasoned professionals, having engaged in several dives in the days leading up to the incident. While their identities have been confirmed, there remains much to unravel regarding the circumstances that led to this tragic event. The diving community is closely monitoring the situation, hoping for answers and solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
