Tragic Drone Strike in Kharkiv Amid Peace Talks Progress
A devastating drone strike in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has left four people dead and 17 injured, according to city officials. Mayor Igor Terekhov reported the casualties following a significant attack on Sunday evening, which struck two districts of the city, causing extensive fires and destruction, including damage to three residential buildings and an infrastructure facility.
Regional military head Oleg Synegubov labeled the attack massive, highlighting the scale of devastation as emergency services were deployed to deal with the aftermath.
The timing of the drone strike coincides with critical discussions taking place in Geneva between US, Ukrainian, and European officials, aimed at formulating a proposal to end the nearly four-year-long conflict in Ukraine.
In a press briefing following the talks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about the discussions, calling the day 'very productive' and indicating that significant progress had been made toward a potential peace deal. However, specifics of the discussions were not disclosed.
The White House acknowledged that these talks in Switzerland represented a substantial advancement towards peace and reiterated that any eventual agreement would fully respect Ukraine's sovereignty. A joint statement from the US and Ukraine after the meeting indicated that the parties have created a refined peace framework as a result of the discussions.
Meanwhile, European officials are reportedly revising a version of the US peace plan for Ukraine, aiming to counter proposed limits on Ukraine's armed forces and territorial concessions. According to a document obtained by Reuters, this modified proposal suggests that Ukraine's military should remain capped at 800,000 personnel in peacetime, as opposed to the stricter 600,000 cap originally put forth by the US.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been actively seeking to mend ties with former US President Donald Trump, who had criticized Ukraine's leadership for not showing sufficient gratitude for American aid. Trump previously commented on his platform, Truth Social, that Ukraine's leadership had expressed 'zero gratitude for our efforts' regarding peace efforts. In a timely response, Zelenskyy took to X, expressing gratitude toward the American people and Trump himself for the military support that has been critical to saving lives in Ukraine, starting with the supply of Javelin missiles.
As the situation develops, both the humanitarian toll of recent attacks and the political maneuvering among global powers will continue to shape the landscape of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
