Tragic Explosion at Port of Barcelona: Emergency Response Activated
On Tuesday morning, the Civil Protection of the Generalitat activated the special emergency plan for the chemical sector in Catalonia, known as Plaseqcat, following a devastating explosion at the Port of Barcelona. The incident, which took place around 10:10 AM, involved a methyl acetate tank at the Energia dock, tragically resulting in one death and another individual injured.
Emergency sources reported that the explosion occurred during maintenance work on the highly flammable methyl acetate tank. Fortunately, the product is classified as non-toxic, alleviating some concerns about potential widespread toxicity. The fire caused by the explosion was brought under control within approximately 40 minutes, thanks to the swift action of the Barcelona Firefighters who were on the scene.
Despite the fire being extinguished, eleven units from the fire department have remained in the area to ensure that there are no further risks. The Medical Emergency System (SEM) confirmed that one of the two injured individuals succumbed to their injuries, highlighting the tragic consequences of the incident.
As investigations continue, authorities are focused on understanding the circumstances leading to the explosion and the necessary measures to prevent similar accidents in the future. The activation of Plaseqcat underscores the region's commitment to safety and preparedness in managing chemical-related emergencies. Local officials have expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the importance of stringent safety protocols in such sensitive environments.
