Tragic Incident at Tarragona Beach Claims Life of Second Minor

A 13-year-old boy has tragically lost his life following a rescue operation that took place at l'Arrabassada beach in Tarragona on Friday. This marks the second fatality attributed to the beach accident, with another minor remaining in critical condition at the Joan XXIII Hospital. On Saturday, President of the Generalitat Salvador Illa shared the devastating news on social media, expressing profound sadness over the loss of this second child. The incident occurred in the afternoon when six young individuals were struggling to escape the water near a rocky area of the beach marked by a yellow flag, signaling dangerous conditions due to strong waves. Reports from Civil Protection indicate that lifeguards saw the trouble the young individuals were in and alerted emergency services around 3:30 PM. While three of them managed to swim back to safety, the others required assistance from emergency responders. Regrettably, one of the young boys, aged 12, could not be revived by medical personnel after being rescued. Additionally, two boys, both aged 13, were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Sadly, one of them succumbed to their injuries in the hours following the accident. In his heartfelt message, President Illa conveyed his condolences to the families and friends affected by this tragic event and praised the exemplary efforts of the Medical Emergency System (SEM) and the staff at Joan XXIII Hospital for their dedicated response during this unfortunate incident.
