Tragic Incident in La Mojonera: A Life Lost to Gender Violence
In a shocking display of domestic violence, a man has reportedly killed his wife in the municipality of La Mojonera, located in the province of Almería. The incident occurred at their shared home, where the accused subsequently surrendered to the Local Police Headquarters. The mayor of La Mojonera, José Miguel Hernández, shared details of the case with EFE, revealing that the victim was not enrolled in the Viogén system—a program designed to protect victims of gender violence.
At approximately 12:30 PM, the alleged perpetrator, 50 years old and of Moroccan origin, walked into the police station to confess his actions. It has been reported that the couple lived on Cuarta Street in La Mojonera and had four children aged three, six, 14, and 19 years. The children are now under the care of relatives in the municipality, with the youngest child being present during the tragic event.
In a press statement, Hernández articulated the community's concern, stating, "Now we are discussing with the Government Delegation of the Junta and the Government Subdelegation what can be done because he left behind four children, and what the situation is, why he did it there in the house with the three-year-old girl."
Despite their tragic circumstances, the mayor noted that the family was well-integrated within the community and had resided in La Mojonera for some time. However, due to the recentness of the crime, he was unable to disclose the names of either the suspect or the deceased.
The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this alleged act of gender violence, which marks a disturbing continuation of such incidents in the area. This represents the second case of gender violence in the province of Almería, following the recent inquiry into the murder of Nieves Gamarra, who was killed at her home in Roquetas de Mar on October 5.
As the investigation unfolds, the Government Delegation against Gender Violence has begun compiling information related to the tragic murder of the 40-year-old woman, highlighting the ongoing issue of domestic abuse and the dire need for greater protection and resources for potential victims. The community mourns the loss of life and must grapple with the repercussions suffered by the innocent children left behind.
