Tragic Loss: Carabiniere Officer Killed in Puglia Shootout
A Carabiniere police officer lost his life early on Thursday in a tragic incident while on duty in Francavilla Fontana, Puglia. The officer, identified as Brigadier Carlo Legrottaglie, was shot when gunmen emerged from their vehicles and opened fire during a car chase. In the ensuing chaos, one of the assailants also succumbed to his injuries after being captured following another shootout.
Reports indicate that the exchange of gunfire took place near a farmhouse in the Grottaglie area of the Taranto province. The circumstances surrounding the gunman's death remain unclear, with investigators trying to determine if his fatal injuries were sustained during the confrontation with Legrottaglie or during his arrest.
The other alleged assailant is currently in custody at the Carabinieri barracks in Martina Franca. The tragic loss of Legrottaglie is felt deeply; he was a father of two and was set to retire in July.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed profound condolences, labeling the officer’s death as a cowardly act. "Brigadier Legrottaglie was a servant of the state, courageously performing his duties to protect the community. He upheld his oath to defend citizens and Italy at all costs," Crosetto stated.
In this moment of sorrow, the minister extended support to Legrottaglie's family and his fellow officers, acknowledging the bravery that led him to sacrifice his life for the security of others. The Carabinieri is recognized as a military force under the Ministry of Defence, underscoring the critical role they play in ensuring public safety.
