Tragic Loss: Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay Dies After Assassination Attempt
Miguel Uribe Turbay, a Colombian senator and member of the Centro Democratico conservative party, has succumbed to injuries after spending nine weeks in intensive care following a shooting incident at an electoral event in Bogotá. The shooting took place on June 7, leaving Uribe, 39, critically injured. He had reportedly been preparing to run in the presidential elections scheduled for May 2026.
In the wake of Uribe’s death, Colombian authorities have arrested four individuals linked to the assassination. Among the suspects are three adults and a 14-year-old boy; the latter has confessed to being paid to carry out the shooting. The suspects face charges of attempted murder, though prosecutors are expected to modify the charges following Uribe's passing. The adults are also charged with exploiting a minor to commit a crime, with all parties pleading not guilty.
The alleged mastermind, identified as Elder José Arteaga Hernandez, also known as El Costeño, was apprehended in early July. The motivations behind this violent crime remain unclear, though it underscores the troubling trend of political violence in Colombia.
The tragic event occurred during a public rally in Modelia, a neighborhood in western Bogotá, where Uribe was delivering a speech when he was struck by three bullets—two in the head and one in the leg. Immediate aid was administered by his bodyguards before he was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Miguel Uribe's political legacy is marked by his family's deep roots in Colombian politics; his grandfather, Julio César Turbay, served as president from 1978 to 1982. Despite not being related to former President Álvaro Uribe, who was in office from 2002 to 2010, Miguel’s political career was heavily influenced by his family's history. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, had a tragic past as she was kidnapped and murdered by Pablo Escobar's cartel in 1990.
Prior to his tenure as a senator, which began in 2022, Uribe had spent several years in local Bogotá administration and unsuccessfully campaigned for the mayoral office in 2018, where he was not elected.
Colombia has long been afflicted by political violence intertwined with drug trafficking and the activities of various armed groups. The country’s grim history includes high-profile assassinations such as that of Jorge Gaitán in 1948 and Luis Carlos Galán in 1989, both tragic events that have shaped the nation's political landscape and are remembered in contemporary narratives, including portrayals in popular media such as Netflix's ‘Narcos.’
Uribe's untimely death is not just a loss for his family and supporters but also highlights the ongoing struggle for political stability in Colombia, where violence continues to cast a shadow over democratic processes.
