Tragic Loss: George Baldock, Former Premier League Player, Drowns in Swimming Accident

George Baldock, the Greece international soccer player, was found dead at his home in Athens on Wednesday, having tragically drowned while swimming in his pool, according to his family. Greek police have stated that there is no initial indication suggesting that the death of the 31-year-old former Premier League player was suspicious.

In a heartfelt statement shared with The Associated Press, Baldock's family expressed their devastation over his sudden passing, confirming that a postmortem examination revealed he drowned at his home in Glyfada, Athens. They stated, 'We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George.'

Baldock, a Panathinaikos defender of Greek heritage born in Britain, had been scheduled to return to the UK on Thursday for the first birthday celebration of his baby son. His family described him as, 'the most special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate, and person.' They added, 'Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you, and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son.'

Baldock made a significant impact in his career, having joined Sheffield United in 2017, where he played a pivotal role in earning promotion to the Premier League twice, first in 2019 and again in 2023. After Sheffield United was relegated to England’s second division, he signed a three-year contract with Panathinaikos in May 2023.

His family also expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support they've received, stating, 'As a family, it has been incredibly touching but equally so very difficult to read the huge number of tributes written by those that knew George and from those whose life he touched. It was impossible not to love him.' They requested privacy as they process their grief during this challenging time.

In a show of respect, a moment of silence was observed in tribute to Baldock ahead of the Nations League match between England and Greece at Wembley Stadium on Thursday, a match that Greece won 2-1.
