Tragic Loss of Lives in English Channel - Call for Urgent Action Against Smuggling
In yet another heartbreaking episode in the ongoing crisis of migration across the English Channel, reports from French media confirmed that at least eight refugees lost their lives when their small boat capsized near Ambleteuse, in the Pas-de-Calais department. The tragic incident occurred during the early hours of Sunday and left several others injured, with one person reported in serious condition.
This disaster follows closely on the heels of another similar tragedy earlier in September, where twelve migrants lost their lives after their boat capsized off the northern coast of France. Among the deceased were several women and minors, a heart-wrenching reflection of the perilous journeys many undertake in search of safety and a better life.
During the rescue operations conducted off the coastal town of Le Portel near Boulogne-sur-Mer, 65 individuals were retrieved from the water, while twelve were found deceased. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who visited the scene, described the situation as a tragedy that affects us all. He underscored the dire circumstances under which these migrants travel, often on boats measuring less than seven meters long and ill-equipped for the treacherous waters of the Channel, which is heavily trafficked by large vessels.
