Tragic New Year’s Eve Fire in CransMontana Claims Lives and Leaves Families in Despair
In a heart-wrenching incident on New Year’s Eve, the picturesque ski resort of CransMontana in the Swiss Alps witnessed a devastating fire that claimed the lives of at least 40 people and left 115 others injured. The governor of the canton of Valais, Mathias Reynard, announced that the process of identifying the deceased could take days due to the severe burns suffered by the victims. Authorities are currently utilizing DNA samples and dental records to ensure accurate identification for the families of the victims.
The Italian ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, confirmed that none of the deceased have been identified as of yet. The tragedy has notably affected the Italian community, with 13 Italians receiving treatment for their injuries in Swiss hospitals and at the specialized Niguarda hospital in Milan. The crisis unit of the Farnesina, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that 19 families have misplaced communication with their Italian relatives who were in CransMontana at the time of the fire. Unfortunately, updates on six missing individuals remain unavailable. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that he plans to visit CransMontana in person, underlining the severity of the situation. Identifying the injured has proven to be particularly challenging, especially for those in critical condition in intensive care who did not possess identification documents or were unable to communicate.
As families await news, many parents are frantically trying to ascertain the whereabouts of their children. Some have traveled directly to CransMontana, while others are contacting hospitals in an effort to find out whether their loved ones are among the injured or among the still unidentified deceased.
