Tragic Outcome in Segovia: Woman Dies After Domestic Violence Incident
A 33-year-old woman who had been in a coma since a domestic violence incident on Sunday passed away this Thursday at the General Hospital of Segovia. The shocking event has raised alarms about the ongoing issues of gender violence in Spain. According to sources from the Government Delegation in Castilla y León, the woman had been assaulted by her partner, a man who was already under a restraining order due to previous incidents of violence.
This couple, who were foreign nationals, resided in Arroyo de Cuéllar in Segovia and shared a minor daughter, who is now being cared for by her maternal grandmother. Following the unfortunate incident, the Sepúlveda Court has ordered the provisional imprisonment of the aggressor, a 36-year-old man, without bail. Initially charged with attempted homicide and violation of the protection order, he is now facing homicide charges in light of the victim's death.
The Court of First Instance and Instruction of Cuéllar had previously opened proceedings concerning mistreatment just a month prior, instigated by a complaint from the victim. At that time, they imposed a prohibition on the aggressor from approaching or communicating with her by any means.
Neighbors reported the incident, alerting the Civil Guard and emergency medical services around 19:42 on Sunday. Reports indicate that the woman suffered severe injuries, including an attempted strangulation. Medical teams from the Health Service of Castilla y León (Sacyl) attempted to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene. Despite their efforts and subsequent stabilization before her transfer to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
Marian Rueda, the Government Subdelegate in Segovia, further explained that the victim was under the Viogen protection system—a measure designed to safeguard women at risk of gender violence—after suffering an earlier violent episode a month ago. Despite being under surveillance, the aggressor violated the restraining order just four days prior, enabling him to inflict severe injuries on the victim.
Tragically, this woman marks the 38th fatality due to gender violence in 2024, with her case being the second in Castilla y León. Since the statistics began being compiled in 2003, a total of 1,282 women have lost their lives due to male violence.
Authorities continue to emphasize the need for vigilance and support for victims of gender violence. Help is available through various resources open 24/7, including the hotline 016, the email 016onlineigualdadgob.es, and a dedicated WhatsApp channel at 600 000 016. In case of emergencies, individuals are urged to call 112 or reach out to the National Police at 091 or the Civil Guard at 062. For those unable to make a call, the ALERTCOPS application can be activated to send an alert with geolocation to the police.
This tragic situation serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing struggle against domestic violence and the importance of effective protective measures for victims.
