Tragic Toll of DANA Disaster: Recovery Efforts in Letur Conclude with Identification of Last Missing Persons
In a heartbreaking development, Antonio Ruiz Santos, the Government delegate of Castilla La Mancha in Albacete, has announced that the bodies of the last two missing individuals in the town of Letur have been recovered. This grim milestone has pushed the death toll from the DANA disaster to a staggering 219 across Spain. Among the six bodies recently found in Letur, three have yet to be identified, meaning that local authorities will continue to search until the identities of all six victims are confirmed.
Earlier, Ruiz Santos had noted the discovery of the fourth victim at the mouth of the Letur stream which flows into the Segura River. This body, retrieved on Tuesday evening, has been identified as Jonathan, a young man who had been missing since October 29. Jonathan disappeared alongside his partner, Mónica, during a catastrophic water surge that hit Letur, subjecting the historic town to devastating floods in three separate waves.
The search efforts have uncovered numerous victims since the disaster struck. On October 30, rescuers located the body of Dolores, a 92-year-old woman, close to the municipality's wastewater treatment plant, approximately one and a half kilometers from the town. The search continued, and on November 3, the body of Antonia, a woman in her 70s, was found 12 kilometers from Letur.
As identification efforts proceed, the community of Letur mourns the loss of its residents in what is a profound tragedy for the region.
