Transforming Communities: The Impact of the Trygga Orten Project Funded by the Postcode Lottery

In Norrköping, Sweden, a transformative initiative known as Trygga Orten, or Safe Place, is making waves in the fight against littering and community disengagement. Supported by the Postcode Lottery and spearheaded by Sweden's City Missions in conjunction with Håll Sverige Rent, this innovative project is revolutionizing how younger generations can engage with and rebuild their communities.

The objective of Trygga Orten is not only to beautify vulnerable neighborhoods but also to empower the youth of Norrköping by instilling them with leadership skills and a sense of pride in their surroundings. Through a variety of methods, including organized cigarette butt collections and community-focused interventions, some areas have seen as much as a 58% reduction in litter.

As Hanan Ahmed, a twenty-year-old who once found herself hesitant and withdrawn, reflects on her time with the program, it becomes clear just how impactful such initiatives can be. Having first stumbled upon Trygga Orten's homework help program at the age of seventeen, Hanan discovered an environment that offered much more than educational assistance. "Here, I've met adults I can actually trust for once. You can tell they work for us and really want what's best for us," she says, marking a stark contrast from her previous experiences where adult interactions felt obligatory and uninspired.

Once regarded as an 'invisible girl,' Hanan’s journey through Trygga Orten has rekindled her self-awareness and social skills. "Before I came here, I was just going through the motions of life. Now, I've uncovered parts of myself I never knew existed," she recalls, showcasing her profound transformation and newfound joy.

The success of Trygga Orten has sparked hopes of expansion, with project manager Martin Callmeryd noting the increasing interest from local organizations wishing to join in and support this endeavor. Launched with the generous aid of the Postcode Lottery, which provided 242 million SEK, the project exemplifies how collaborative community investments can foster significant change.

"The ambition is for this project to spread across the country, and we are starting to see more actors wanting to participate in supporting their local communities through our work," Callmeryd mentions, reinforcing the idea that the project is both necessary and effective in addressing societal challenges.

One of the key aspects of the Postcode Lottery’s involvement is its structure of providing 'Dream Projects' funding, which encourages innovation and collaboration among nonprofit organizations. Hanan's story is just one of many that highlight the potential for such funding to create substantial societal impact, as well as the importance of safe spaces for youth.

Through efforts like those coordinated by Trygga Orten, the Postcode Lottery is not merely financing projects but investing in the collective future of communities. Successful initiatives foster environments where trust, respect, and personal growth can thrive, ultimately leading to reduced litter and engaged local ecosystems.

The Trygga Orten project embodies the spirit of community, showing that with the right support, young people can lead the charge towards a cleaner, more connected, and hopeful future. As Hanan continues her journey, she hopes that her positive experiences can inspire others who may be hesitant to engage and seek help. The groundwork laid by Trygga Orten could pave the way for an even broader movement of empowerment and environmental responsibility across Sweden.
