Transforming Lives: The Impact of Volunteer Anesthesiologists with Operation Smile

For over a decade, Johannes Quiding Lood has dedicated his life to the practice of anesthesiology, with much of his work taking place at Helsingborg Hospital. However, his passion for helping those in need has led him to participate in multiple missions abroad with the humanitarian organization, Operation Smile. Established in 1982, Operation Smile aims to provide free surgeries for children and adults suffering from cleft lip and palate in low- and middle-income countries.

Johannes’s journey with Operation Smile began during his medical education when he learned about the organization through a friend. Fascinated by their work, he seized the opportunity to join his first mission to Nicaragua in 2018, traveling there as part of a training program. Subsequently, he became an independent anesthesiologist, embarking on several missions, including trips to India and Madagascar.

The core of Operation Smile's work focuses on transforming not just appearances but lives. In many parts of the world, children born with cleft lips and palates face severe challenges that extend beyond aesthetic concerns, impacting their ability to speak, eat, and integrate into society. Many individuals live in shame or fear of stigma, often hidden away by their families. Johannes recalls a boy in Nicaragua who had not seen sunlight for four years due to his condition.

Describing the work done during missions, Johannes explains that each operation is not just a medical procedure but a lifeline for these children. The teams are composed of diverse volunteers, including surgeons, orthodontists, speech therapists, and nurses, who work tirelessly to ensure each child receives the care they desperately need. "We aim to operate as many children as possible within our timeframe, ensuring safety and efficiency,” he says.

The logistics of these missions can be daunting. Conditions in the operating rooms are often rudimentary, lacking essential equipment found in modern facilities. To tackle these challenges, Johannes improvises with materials like duct tape and zip ties, ensuring that each surgical station is organized and functional for rapid patient turnover. The mission atmosphere is filled with camaraderie, with teams collectively working towards a shared goal—improving the lives of the children they serve.

One of the remarkable aspects of Johannes’s mission experience is the dramatic transformation seen in patients post-surgery. During screening days in Madagascar, over 200 children came forward to see if they qualified for surgery. Many of these children had faced malnutrition, requiring intervention before they could safely undergo surgery. Johannes recalls a two-year-old boy, previously malnourished, who received nutritional support before finally being treated. "It was incredible to see him healthy and happy after surgery, ready to face a brighter future,” Johannes shares.

Donor support plays an instrumental role in the success of these missions. A single cleft lip surgery can cost as little as 2400 Swedish kronor, making each contribution vital. Johannes emphasizes the impact that donations have, with 80% of support coming from individuals in Sweden, highlighting the importance of community engagement in humanitarian efforts.

One of Johannes’s most poignant memories comes from Madagascar, where he and the team witnessed the profound effects of their work. After operating on 127 children, they visited a patient village where the children and their families celebrated together in a joyous display of gratitude. Johannes recounts his emotional response: "As we walked down that dirt road filled with music and dancing, I was overwhelmed by the realization of the change we had contributed to in so many lives. It was one of the most moving experiences of my career.”

Through fostering strong relationships with local medical professionals, teaching skills, and witnessing the resilience of families, Johannes finds the work both challenging and rewarding. He aspires to continue volunteering with Operation Smile, driven by the meaningful connections and the positive change he witnesses.

As Johannes prepares for future missions, he remains steadfast in his commitment to Operation Smile’s mission. He expresses a desire for more individuals to contribute to this impactful work: "Helping to change a child’s life is one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced. It’s not just surgery; it’s a chance for children to have normal lives and bright futures."

In a world where access to healthcare remains a significant issue, Johannes’s story exemplifies the life-changing potential of volunteerism, reminding us of the power of compassion and community support. Take part in this important cause and help change lives today through Operation Smile.
